According to relationship experts, where you propose is key to getting your man to say yes. First, you need to know your intended well enough to be able to put him into one of four categories. After that, simply choose the destination most likely to make him say “yes”.
Maldives for the Quiet Types
Type A is sensitive, helpful and likes to be appreciated. However, as a private person a public proposal would be a sure way to drive him away. Take time to woo him and spend time together somewhere idyllic such as the Maldives or the beautiful island of Fiji. After you have planned the perfect holiday together, how could he possibly refuse?
Golfing in the Algarve
Type B boyfriends can be tricky. They are very traditional people who are analytical thinkers and would probably not appreciate having their girlfriend make the first move. The only way to soften the blow is by dropping hints beforehand so by the time you drop down on one knee, he has already subconsciously comes to terms with the idea of marriage. You just beat him to it.
They would probably be most comfortable with a proposal on the 18th hole after a round of golf (and girls, do let him win!) If golf is not their thing, take him to a world-class art museum or a football match and ask the question, rather than over a romantic candlelit dinner.
Portugal’s Algarve has some excellent golf holidays while Barcelona is ideal for surprising him with two tickets to see Barcelona play, bookable through viagogo, followed by a double celebration if they win!
Jewels of the Caribbean
Type C are clear about what they want from life. The best way to deal with this is to test the water by recounting how a girlfriend proposed and see how he responds. Could be, you just have to plan an exotic holiday and hope they ask the question first.
Consider a break in the Caribbean where jewellers shops line most streets, making it easy to steer him in the right direction at least. The delightful island of Saint Maarten offers beautiful beaches, and a unique mix of French and Dutch cultures. A day shopping in the Dutch capital of Philipsburg or window-shopping in the French capital of Marigot offers a string of opportunities for buying a ring, from Cartier to local craftsmen.
Set the Date on Top of the World
Type D are ambitious team players with a showy streak to their character. This partner is the most likely to be comfortable with most ideas, so an activity holiday that he will embrace with enthusiasm should be just the ticket. This guy is going to be able to handle a proposal over the tannoy system or in a public place with an audience and he will lap up the applause!
Consider trekking the Inca trail, culminating in a visit to Machu Picchu, or climbing in the Himalayas with a local guide. Alternatively, book a wildlife safari in Kenya with opportunities for hot air balloon trips, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, watching the Great Migration or camping in the treetops. This trip may make him realize he needs a Girl Friday at his side to enjoy life to the full. If all else fails, it will be a wonderful holiday!
